August 15, 2023 at 9:20 PM Numerous lightning-caused fires broke out this afternoon, on the Mendocino, Klamath and Six Rivers National Forests. Here is a brief summary:

CA-KNF Head: 4000 acres brush and timber, 0% contained. Fire has a rapid rate of spread, structures are threatened with evacuations in progress. There is a threat to powerlines and HWY 96, Hwy 96 is currently closed to through traffic.

CA-MNF Slide: 60 acres, 0% contained with a moderate rate of spread. Structures are threatened.

CA-SHF Upper: 150 acres timber, 0% contained. Fire is located in the Trinity Alps Wilderness. Fire has a moderate rate of spread with short range spotting

CA-SRF Lone Pine: 150 acres timber, 0% contained with moderate rate of spread. Structures are threatened and there is a threat to cultural land of The Hoopa Tribe

CA-SRF Diamond: 30 acres timber, 0% contained with a moderate rate of spread.

CA-SRF Holiday: 100 acres timber, 0% contained, with a moderate rate of spread.

August 15, 2023 at 5:51 PM Confirmed fire in the Tadpole Creek area on the Tahoe National Forest. Helicopter 514 is at scene, requesting a rappel crew due to the remote location on the North Fork of the American River. 1/4 to 1/2 acre, slow rate of spread.

August 15, 2023 at 1:47 PM Lightning map: 3,730 strikes on Monday in California. Lightning activity focused over the Sierra and Mendocino areas on Monday. 3,730 strikes were recorded within California and 2,703 strikes were detected within the National Forests.

POLL: 20×20. Lined and in patrol status. Will be monitored today.
WEBER: Lined and will be staffed today to continue mop-up operations. .5 acres.
ENGLISH: Lined and will be staffed through the day to continue mop up operations. Approximately 50×50.
OMEGA: Held at .5 acres. Lined and mop up will continue today.
MEADOW: Lightning struck tree with 20×20 ground fire. Two rappellers staffed it through the night. It is lined and the hazard tree has been been put on the ground. Truckee Hotshots are working their way in.
GRANITE – Visible from Interstate 80, less than 1/4 acre, 4 rappellers staffed incident through the night. Currently lined and in mop up status. Lightning struck tree which was very dangerous. Crews are working on mitigating the hazard. Will be staffed today with a 10 person hand crew.

August 14, 2023 at 8:25 PM Lightning cells this afternoon sparked several small fires, mostly on the Tahoe National Forest. All the fires are staffed and have very little potential for growth. Lightning recon flights will resume tomorrow morning.

August 14, 2023 at 2:02 PM At 159 PM PDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm over Lake Tahoe, moving northwest at 5 mph. Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is possible. Locations impacted include Tahoe City, Kings Beach, Incline Village-Crystal Bay, Carnelian Bay, Sugar Pine Point S, Glenbrook, Homewood, William Kent Campground, Dollar Point, Meeks Bay, Tahoe State Rec Area Campground, Meeks Bay Campground, and Sunnyside-Tahoe City. Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm and may lead to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways. If on or near Lake Tahoe, get out of the water and move indoors or inside a vehicle. Remember, lightning can strike out to 10 miles from the parent thunderstorm. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Move to safe shelter now! Do not be caught on the water in a thunderstorm.

August brings one of the best known annual meteor showers, the Perseids. And this year the stage is set for a good show, as the peak night – August 12th and into the 13th – is near the new moon. The meteors are bits of dust – most no larger than sand grains – that originate from comet Swift-Tuttle. Earth sweeps through the comet’s debris trail every year about this same time, resulting in the annual shower. More details here.

Isolated thunderstorms may produce dangerous lightning, gusty winds, and brief rain, impacting outdoor activities and recreationists. Lightning may lead to new fire starts. Storms are expected to have limited rainfall initially, then wetter storms but with more lightning possible over the weekend.
